Can It Be December Now?

I need to vent.  First of all, I'm addicted to Facebook.  Who isn't, these days?  Oh, that's right.  People with a life.  But I digress.  I accept the fact that, due to my choice as a stay-at-home mom with 3 little guys to take care of, there are days when my only contact with other grown-ups is through Facebook.  I admit to checking it about 300 times a day, just in case someone said something funny.  But I'm about ready to take a Facebook hiatus until after the elections are over in November.  I get that Facebook is a place to share political ideas and to try to educate people on the way to elections.  But I am FED UP with the insane amount of candidate bashing that is going on.  Seriously.  I'm not going to say which party, because to a degree it's both parties.  But is it really necessary to post 6 status updates in 10 minutes about how much you hate that one guy?  Without saying anything redeeming about the guy you're supporting?  I'd love to hear why you're going to vote for your guy.  You've made it clear you're not going to vote for the other guy, but going on a hate campaign isn't useful, it doesn't enlighten anyone about what's really going on, and 200 words on why the other guy stinks isn't going to influence my decision.  My question is, what's all that hate attempting to accomplish?  Are you trying to swing my vote?  Are you trying to make sure everyone on Facebook knows that you are voting for that one guy?  Are you trying to convince me that the other guy you hate so much is narrow minded and hateful?  Because if all you're posting on Facebook is mudslinging, I'm convinced someone's being narrow-minded and hateful, but it's not that other guy.  If you're going to go all political on Facebook, why don't you just tell me, without bashing the other guy, what makes your guy so stinking awesome.  Give me a rational, detailed list of reasons why you are voting for your guy.  Don't give me a list of reasons you're not voting for the other guy.  That's all.

P.S.  I'm serious about a hiatus.  Maybe.  I might get the shakes and cold sweats.  I heard on the radio the other day that going cold turkey off of Facebook is the same as quitting crack cold turkey.

If you go off it, I will join you. I'm looking for an excuse. FB makes me batty.

Ooh, I love how blogger announces that someone has deleted their comment, like it's full of profanity or something! It makes me look naughty instead of having stupidly posted my comment twice.

This is what Facebook has down to me. Made me stupid.

Well said. And I agree. I feel like social discourse has turned into, "Your guy kills bunnies for fun!" and, "Well, your guy kicked an old lady in the shin!"

I watched Social Network, the movie about facebook and it made me want to take a hiatus. It made me feel like one of millions that were sucked in. It lasted about ten minutes. I just hide people who make political comments. I respect your decision, however you will be robbing us other fb addicts of your hilarious comments.

"I'm not addicted because I can quit anytime I want.". That's what I say to myself. Do you know how to unfollow people? You should do that.

I'm ready to block a bunch of people in my newsfeed. Mostly I'm tired of the stupid pictures and reposts.

I am so with you on this Rach! I have been blocking people left and right so I won't see all the political propaganda. :-/

I too have to keep up with everyone on facebook, it is my escape from all my responsibilities that I don't want to do. And I need to tone it down as well. As far as politics go, it is hard to stay informed when there are so many opinions out there about candidates that may not be true. I like to stay educated on the political front, but it is hard to determine what is the truth, and what is bogus. I will be glad to get this election overwith as well, I just hope we can all make the best choice!
